Frecha da Mizarela Waterfall
PortugalWith a breathtaking drop of over 60 meters, the Frecha da Mizarela waterfall is one of the most striking natural sights in Portugal. Here, the Caima River plunges dramatically down the escarpments of the Serra da Freita, surrounded by lush vegetation and rare plant species.
You can admire the waterfall from several viewpoints – near the village of Mizarela, from Castanheira, or along the PR7 geotourism trail “Nas Escarpas da Mizarela”. The surrounding slopes preserve remnants of ancient forests, including species from the Laurissilva and Fagossilva, such as rhododendrons and native oaks (Quercus robur and Quercus pyrenaica).
The impressive formation of the waterfall is the result of the geological interplay between schist and granite, shaped by erosion over time. This unique landscape has made the Frecha a favorite destination for canyoning and climbing enthusiasts.
Classified as a geosite of national importance, Frecha da Mizarela is part of the “Freita, a Serra Encantada” route in the Arouca Geopark. It has also served as inspiration in literature and cinema, notably in Abel Botelho’s short story “Mulheres da Beira”, later adapted for film by director Rino Lupo.
The site is featured along the PR7 and PR15 trails and hosts iconic events like the Filhos da Freita Marathon and the Ultra Trail da Serra da Freita.
