Pedras Parideiras (Birthing Stones)
PortugalIn the village of Castanheira lies one of the Arouca Geopark’s most fascinating natural phenomena: the Pedras Parideiras (literally, “birthing stones”). Recognized as a Local Natural Monument since 2022 and a geosite of international significance by UNESCO, these unique granite rocks naturally release dark nodules over time, a rare geological process that has long intrigued locals and visitors alike.
To fully appreciate the science and stories behind this phenomenon, a visit to the Casa das Pedras Parideiras (Birthing Stones House) – Interpretation Center is highly recommended. Open since 2012, the center offers an engaging and educational experience for all ages.
While in Castanheira, take in the stunning view of the Mizarela waterfall from the village square, or explore the surrounding landscapes on the PR15 geotourism trail — a 17 km circular hike through the Serra da Freita plateau. Along the way, you might encounter Arouquesa cattle and their loyal mountain dogs.
This geosite also marks a crossing point of the Ultra Trail Serra da Freita and is featured in both the Route of Man in the Arouca Geopark and the Water and Stone Route of the Montanhas Mágicas network.
