Hell’s Gate and the Claw

Portugal
Type:Natural

Hell’s Gate (Porta do Inferno) is one of the most dramatic and mythical landscapes in the Arouca Geopark – a narrow, panoramic passage carved between two steep, rugged schist slopes. It marks the natural border between the municipalities of Arouca and S. Pedro do Sul and has long evoked awe and fear in those who crossed it.

Shaped over millennia by the streams of Covas do Monte (east) and Palhais (west), the terrain here is wild and imposing. To the west, the striking formation known as “The Claw” (Garra) resembles a massive bird of prey’s talon carved into the mountainside. In spring, this scene becomes even more vivid as yellow carqueja and pink heather bloom, painting the landscape with vibrant color.

This geosite is part of the “Through the Mines and Unknown Corners of Paiva” itinerary and serves as one of the stunning backdrops of the Ultra Trail da Serra da Freita race.
