Sport Climbing in the Upper Sava Valley – Limestone Dreams in the Julian Alps
SloveniaThe Upper Sava Valley in northwestern Slovenia offers several excellent outdoor sport climbing crags on solid limestone, set against the backdrop of the Julian Alps. Popular climbing areas include those around Mojstrana and Dovje (two villages near Kranjska Gora), the Vršič Pass, and the Radovna Valley. Each crag features bolted sport routes catering to various skill levels, with easy access and beautiful alpine scenery. Below is an overview of the major crags, with practical details for visiting climbers.
Urbasova Skala (Mojstrana/Dovje): ~39 bolted routes (mostly single-pitch, 12–30 m high), on good limestone. The climbs are predominantly slabby to vertical and of easier difficulty, making this area ideal for beginners and families
Blažčeva Skala (Dovje/Mojstrana): approximately 80 bolted routes in total, including many long single-pitch and some multi-pitch lines up to 80 m high. Routes here are mostly steep and exposed, requiring solid technique (helmet recommended due to some loose rock). This crag is suited to experienced climbers seeking harder climbs.
Vršič Pass Climbing Area (Kranjska Gora): 35 bolted routes on the north side of the Vršič Pass, ranging from short pitches to multi-pitch climbs up to ~100 m in length. The routes follow “smooth slabs with good rock” on the alpine walls visible from the pass. Grades offering a mix of easier slab routes and some moderately hard climbs. This crag is also considered fairly family-friendly, though the setting is high-mountain terrain.
