Trilobites Museum

Portugal
Type:Museum

Home to some of the largest and most remarkable trilobite fossils in the world, the Trilobites Museum was established as a private initiative to preserve a collection of significant scientific value, originally discovered in the Canelas quarry (locally known as Pedreira do Valério).

Inaugurated on July 1, 2006, the museum showcases fossils of ancient life forms that lived on Earth around 465 million years ago. This internationally important geological heritage draws thousands of visitors each year – ranging from scientists and students to curious tourists.

The building itself was designed using local slate, the same rock in which the trilobites were fossilised, creating a strong link between form and content. The architectural concept reflects the trilobite’s anatomy, dividing the space into three main sections: auditorium, museum exhibition area, and reception/shop.

Visitors can watch a 20 minute documentary that explores the fascinating history of trilobites and highlights the scientific work carried out to protect and promote this extraordinary fossil record.
