Birthing Stones House – Interpretative Center
PortugalIn 2012, an old village house – once used as a corral and hayloft – was transformed into the Birthing Stones House, an interpretative centre dedicated to one of Arouca Geopark’s most iconic geosites.
The building was fully restored, preserving its original granite walls and blending traditional rural architecture with modern elements. Inside, visitors can watch the 3D documentary “Birthing Stones: a Geological Treasure”, also available in English, which offers insight into the unique features of these rocks and the geological transformations of Planet Earth over time.
Beyond its scientific and educational role, the Birthing Stones House also includes a shop featuring local products such as handicrafts, jams, liqueurs, and a selection of publications about the natural and cultural heritage of Arouca Geopark.
Outside, visitors can follow a short walkway trail to explore two natural outcrops of the birthing stones. To further explore the village of Castanheira and the Freita Mountain plateau, audio guides and Geobike rentals are available on site – ideal for discovering the area in an independent and eco-friendly way.
